The Manchester Storm have been quite busy in this off-season as the look to continue their impressive rise up the rankings in a bid to reclaim their Patton Conference championship title.
The latest acquisition has been the re-signing of fan favorite Shane Bakker who returns for a second season at the Storm shelter under head coach Ryan Finnerty.
Bakker is another in the growing list of players that are not only playing for the greatest team in the land (not biased at all) but who are also using the opportunity to attend the University of Salford in a bid to further their education and gain an MBA.
Standing at a very imposing 6’4″ and weighing in at 95kg, Bakker is a great presence on the ice and was an important piece in the Storms championship push last season as he hit 16 points in 48 games (G3 A13) and dominated the ice with his size and power, amassing 128 penalty minutes!
It’s no wonder we were called goons!
Bakker has previously had spells in America in the AHL with Hamilton Bulldogs, St John Ice Caps and the Providence Bruins where he took no prisoners with his hard hitting old-school hockey style.
Head Coach Finnerty went on to say;
“I am excited to have Bakker back. He’s a popular figure in our team, and a great leader. Shane does so many of the little things that go unnoticed and we feel fortunate to have him as part of the club”
And it’s not just the head coach that’s happy to have Bakker back in the locker room, the big man himself was more than happy at the announcement;
“I couldn’t be more happy to be back in Manchester. Last year, the rink was my favourite place to go to everyday. We had a great group of guys with a winning attitude, and that’s the kind of team I want to be a part of”
As the team starts to get more and more filled I can’t help but feel excited for what the future holds for the boys from Manchester, one things for sure though…
It’s gonna be a hell of a ride!
