Three is a Magic Number.

On Thursday, the Belfast Giants announced another exciting signing, but little did we fans know another two were on the way. All three of these signings are exciting ones, so let’s get down to the nitty gritty and take a look at who we are welcoming with open arms…

First up, it was announced on Thursday that we will be welcoming #5, Guillaume Gélinas. Gélinas is coming to the Giants after spending a season on the ice for HC Banska Bystrica of Slovakia. This talented defenceman signed a three year entry level contract back in 2014 with Minnesota Wild of the NHL, having already iced for their affiliate teams, Iowa Wild and the Quad City Mallards. At the end of this deal, he signed a one year contract with HC Banska Bystrica and helped them win the Slovakian National Championship. Having this achievement with the fifth strongest league in Europe makes him a player to watch, in my opinion!

Welcome Guillaume Gélinas!

Following this signing, I genuinely thought that was all for last week. Low and behold, Coach Keefe had another surprise for us fans, in the form of two returning players.

Firstly I want to give a huge welcome back to #35, Andrew Dickson. Dickson is playing

his 8thfull season in Belfast and has won his third championship with us- the 2017/18 Challenge Cup. I don’t know about you, but I love to see home gown talent in a team that I love, and Dicko is one of ours. A Ballymoney native, Dickson has only ever played for five other teams in total; the Belfast City Bruins, the Sheffield Steelers, the Edinburgh Capitals, the Castlereagh Spartans and the Invicta Dynamos.

Welcome back, Dicko! We are so glad to have you!

And finally, another big Belfast welcome back to #74, Matt Towe! Towe made a name for himself in Northern Ireland when, in December 2017, he opened up Cargo Coffee in Bangor, a drive through café that is built from upcycled shipping containers and use locally sourced beans. Returning for his fourth season on Belfast ice as injury cover due to his booming business and a new born, Towe was the winning goal scorer for the 2017/18 Challenge Cup against the Cardiff Devils.

Welcome back Towe! May this season be as amazing as Cargo’s coffee! I swear I’m not biased..

There you have it folks, another three signings in one week. Three really is a magic number! But I will say one thing… who the hell am I getting on the back of my jersey this season?
