Alexander Alexeyev is the latest in a long line of Russian born players for the current Stanley Cup Champion side.
He took to the ice in game one for the Washington Capitals in the NHL Prospect Showcase and showed just why the Capitals picked him.
On the ice with fellow Russian prospect Ilya Samsanov, Alexeyev proved to be a real asset with two assists and a brawl to his name.
After trying and failing to hit the back of the net himself the 6ft 3, 200lb defenseman passed the puck off to teammate Shane Gersich for the game tying goal.
What stood out however was Alexeyev dropping the gloves in defence of teammate Connor Hobbs, after Hobbs was visually shaken by a hit from Nashville’s Olivier late in the first period.
Pundits have credited Alexeyev with a maturity beyond his years in Interviews and during media meetings. He could be closer to the pros than anyone might have thought, however it looks like he will be returning to the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League for this upcoming season in order to progress and further his game.
We will follow his progress and those of the rest of the Capitals prospects as the season starts out.
